New research by Viewforth Consulting Ltd. has found that the three British universities that have a presence in Medway contribute more than £143.6 million to the local economy.
The report commissioned by Canterbury Christ Church University, the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich (who all share a campus in Medway at the Chatham Maritime Trust) sought to calculate the impact the three universities have on the local area.
Another major finding is that the universities also have a wider impact on the south-east at large, contributing £234.7 million to the wider economy - the equivalent of 1,500 full-time jobs.
The Chatham Maritime campus is currently home to around 10,500 students and hundreds of members of staff. Of the students, 41% are drawn from other parts of the south-east, 34% from the rest of the UK and 13% come to study in Medway from overseas. Their personal spending alone is estimated to total £158.2 million, excluding tuition fees.
