A block of purpose-built student accommodation in Aberdeen is the first of its kind to win a Saltire Housing Design Award.

Powis Place in Aberdeen is the first to be presented with the accolade in the 81-year history of the awards at a ceremony held in Edinburgh.

The building was designed by architects Carson and Partners and features 196 student beds split across a mix of en-suite clusters and studio rooms. The accommodation also comes equipped with an on-site gym as well as car parking spaces and a landscaped courtyard.

Those judging the project said: "Powis Place has a confident and sophisticated presence on a challenging corner site at the edge of the city centre. Its residents enjoy outside space both in a protected courtyard and a penthouse terrace with expansive views."

"This is an exceptional project demonstrating how commoditised housing built to a budget can be a significant work of architecture."

Powis Place is currently managed by Homes for Students, which also operates Fraser Studios in Aberdeen under its Prestige Student Living brand.
