Another block of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) in Coventry is seeking permission to let to non-students due to a lack of demand.
According to the agents acting on behalf of Signature Student Living, Covid-19 has reduced the need for student accommodation. Therefore, the applicant is looking for a temporary change of use that would allow it to be used by either students or as serviced apartments for up to 90 days, to provide short-term accommodation.
Documents submitted as part of the application suggested that allowing the building to be used as serviced apartments will ensure its continued use during a period when it is not required by students.
Coventry has witnessed a rapid expansion in the availability of PBSA and questions have been raised over the impact that the pandemic will have on the city's stock. However, Coventry's cabinet member for housing has said he believes the decline in demand will be temporary and there is still demand for PBSA.
