Plans have been submitted to Leicester City Council for a 125-unit purpose-built student accommodation scheme located in St Nicholas Circle.

The proposals aim to transform the derelict buildings currently located on the site to help meet student demand.

The plans would see the demolition of the existing buildings on site to make way for three new buildings ranging in height from 4, 7 and 9 storeys.

The scheme will comprise 108 studio flats, two 3-bed clusters, eleven 4-bed clusters and two 1-bed private rental apartments for a total of 160 beds (158 of which will be allocated for students).

Staniforth Architects have commented on the positive impact the higher education institutes have on the economy in Leicester.

On behalf of applicants City Group Leicester Ltd, Staniforth Architects commented: "The universities and their students have a very positive impact on the local economy, boosting Leicester's national and international profile. The construction and occupation of student accommodation also creates employment and supports local business and often delivers physical regeneration on disused sites and buildings."

Also included as part of the plans are a ground floor retail unit as well as a communal area for the residents.

Commenting on the location, Staniforth Architects added: "Close proximity to the shops and social centre of Braunstone Gate, Leicester city centre to the east and the proximity of the university campus to the south make this an attractive location for students. Most facilities that students would require from shops to entertainment and cultural venues are within easy walking distance."

Plans remain open for consultation until August 31st and can be identified under application number 20221210.
