Planning approval for 498 student beds and an 85-bed care home on a brownfield site in Sheffield has been granted.

The purpose-built student accommodation scheme will be located just east of Sheffield city centre on Maltravers Road, near Sheffield Hallam University.

Sama Investment Group, the UK's first regionally-focused Shariah-compliant real estate investment manager, are behind the scheme.

The two schemes, dubbed Parkhill Views, will occupy the 1.7-hectare plot.

The student block is set to stand 11-storeys in height and will comprise 354 studios and 144 cluster rooms. The three-storey care home will be set apart from the student rooms.

Co-founder and chairman of Sama Investment Group, Bilal Ahmed, commented: "This large, barren plot on Maltravers Road has long been an eyesore for locals.

"It's tremendous that Sheffield City Council has backed our plans to transform the site with attractive schemes for a new care home and purpose-built student accommodation.

"By housing some of Sheffield's 60,000 student population in large purpose-built facilities like Parkhill Views, we will help free up rental property in the city for other residents, which in turn will ease the housing crisis."

Axis Architecture has worked with the Sama Group on the scheme.

A number of amenities are planned for the student scheme such as sports areas, a gym, a cinema, a laundrette and cycle storage.

ADG architects have designed the care home, which will also contain a hair salon, family room and cafe.
