The University of Manchester has announced plans to redevelop its Fallowfield Campus, aiming to provide more high-quality student accommodation.

This development is part of a phased redevelopment project to increase the availability of contemporary bedrooms and student social spaces.

Currently, the University is in the process of advancing a planning application, which would replace existing bed spaces with up to 3,300 new ones. This endeavour would result in 5,400 beds across the Fallowfield campus and will boost the current bed count by up to 950. By expanding the housing options, students will have a wider selection and it will help address the need for high-quality, contemporary bedrooms.

The redevelopment will be executed in multiple phases and will involve the demolition of Owens Park Tower, which has been closed for several years.

To gather local input and share emerging plans, a public consultation has been launched, offering residents, local groups, students, and staff the opportunity to provide their feedback before the outline planning application is submitted to the Manchester City Council.

Dr Simon Merrywest, Director for the Student Experience, expressed his thoughts on the redevelopment, stating: "The proposals for the redevelopment of this area of the Fallowfield campus will strengthen the University's ability to offer a world-class, supportive student experience in well-located, good value, quality accommodation. This redevelopment provides an opportunity to widen the choice and supply of student bedrooms whilst ensuring they are fulfilling the requirements of future students studying at the University.

"Through creating these welcoming and inclusive spaces, it helps create a positive sense of place for our students as they live, learn and thrive within the surrounding community."

Prior to submitting the outline planning application, an initial phase of enabling works, including the refurbishment of existing accommodation in Oak House, will commence in the summer. Additionally, the relocation of the student reception will be completed in time for the start of the 2023/24 academic year.
