On Tuesday 7th December, the Oxford City planning committee voted unanimously to approve the building of a new 189-bed student accommodation.

The site, located at 19 Between Towns Road in Cowley, was previously home to the Cowley Conservative Club. The original building was erected in the 1920s, however very little of the original structure remains. The Conservative Club was closed in 2015, and the site has remain unused since that time.

Plans were submitted by Oxford-based company Cantay Estates Ltd, the property development arm of Cantay Group. Plans consist of 189 student rooms, as well as communal areas. It is predicted that the accommodation will house both Oxford Brookes University and University of Oxford students.

Although the plans were originally thought to be controversial with city residents, no objections were raised at the council's planning meeting. It was confirmed in the meeting that the accommodation would have 24-hour staff on-site, which may help to reduce noise levels caused by students.
