Durham University students express frustration and concern as they await confirmation of accommodation for the upcoming 2023/24 academic year. A poll conducted in February revealed that 46% of the students had not received a response regarding room allocation, with 41% of those who did hear back being unsuccessful. The situation has left many worried about finding alternative housing by September, with limited options and high prices making it challenging for students to secure suitable accommodation.

According to Sturents, as of 19th February, there were 75 properties still available to rent in Durham for the 2023/24 academic year, with 73 of these properties being listed at £169 per person per week or more.

Students shared their discontent, criticising the university for delays in communication and lack of support. Many felt betrayed after receiving a positive image of university life and college accommodation during their first year, only to face uncertainty and difficulty securing housing for the following year. While the university guarantees college-managed accommodation for first-year undergraduate students, returning students face limited availability, resulting in anxiety and hardship for many. As the situation continues to unfold, students are voicing their concerns over housing affordability and accessibility, leading some to consider switching universities or dropping out due to financial constraints.
