University of Birmingham

The oldest red brick university in the UK, the University of Birmingham has been providing first class education for over a century. It was named University of the Year 2014 in The Times Higher Education Awards, and consistently ranks in the top three of the British Universities and Colleges Sport League. In fact, its sports facilities are so impressive that the Jamaican track and field team for the 2012 London Olympics trained there.

Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University currently caters for around 22,000 students over eight campuses, which are currently undergoing a £260m investment programme. The university boasts historical strengths in the creative and the performing arts, and recently opened a state-of-the-art £62m building for design and media students in 2013. The Birmingham Government School of Design was also the first college of design outside of London, opened in 1843.

Aston University

After beginning life as Birmingham Municipal Technical School in 1956, Aston University was officially formed in 1966 and is ranked as one of the world's best new universities (after being ranked as the 42nd best university in the world under 50 years old). It has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK and more than 70% of Aston students take a placement year after the university pioneered the concept in the 60s.

Newman University

Situated in Bartley Green (about 8 miles south-west of the city centre) Newman University was created in 1968 as the Newman College of Higher Education. However, it only became a full university in 2013.
