The UK's student housing crisis is reaching nightmarish proportions, with Bristol, Manchester, and Glasgow facing a predicted shortage of 620,000 beds by 2026, according to StuRents' analysis. The current shortfall of 283,100 beds is forcing students into subpar accommodation with skyrocketing rents. One student in Manchester found himself in a precarious situation, residing in a hotel for two weeks before moving into a flatshare without a contract, eventually facing eviction with minimal notice.


StuRents' Head of Research, Richard Ward, attributes this crisis to a surge in student numbers coupled with a slowdown in purpose-built student accommodation delivery, particularly affecting cities like Glasgow and Manchester. The Renters Reform Bill is seen as a positive step, but without significant action to improve housing supply, the situation is expected to worsen, warns Save the Student.
