The student housing market has been facing a crisis, with the price of accommodation skyrocketing in some cities. To help students navigate the private rental sector in this climate, Edinburgh News reported the top ten cheapest and most expensive university towns and cities in the UK using StuRents data.

StuRents averaged the weekly price of rent across PBSA and HMO in university cities across the UK. This data excludes the cost of university-owned beds. Based on this, the 5 most expensive cities are:
- London - with an average weekly rent of £288.65 per person
- Bristol - with an average weekly rent of £220.77 per person
- Glasgow - with an average weekly rent of £204.77 per person
- Kingston upon Thames - with an average weekly rent of £202.64 per person
- Edinburgh - with an average weekly rent of £200.74 per person

By contrast, the cheapest university cities in the UK are:
- Aberdeen - with an average weekly rent of £96.08 per person
- Stoke-on-Trent - with an average weekly rent of £100.51 per person
- Preston - with an average weekly rent of £107.00 per person
